Where to buy healthy meat in Halifax (HRM)

Cows grazing in field

When we consider how our ancestors lived (thousands of years ago), they consumed healthy meats from healthy animals.  Today, most of the meats we eat come from animals raised on farms vs animals grazing about in their natural environment.  They are often fed food like grains and corn to fatten them up.  Some are also given antibiotics and other drugs to fight off infections they may have in their crowded environment.  We want to try to eat foods that come from the healthiest animals.  When we eat beef, we want to have grass-fed beef since this is the type of food these animlas would be eating in the wild.  We want the beef, chicken, and all the animal meats we eat to be free from antibiotics and other drugs.  When animals are eating the food they are genetically designed to eat and moving around to get healthier strong bones, their meat will often be more alkaline than the other types of processed meats.  These are the places in Halifax (HRM) that offer some healthy meats:

Some of the bigger grocery stores are now starting to offer locally produced healthy meats since there is now a greater demand for these high quality meats.

Look for healthier meats in your area and do your best to support your local farmers!

    • Hi Marley,

The Nature’s Cove on the Bedford Hwy often takes orders for turkeys and so does the Organic Earth Market on Quinpool. There is a butcher in the Hydrostone called Highland Drive (just got bought by Getaway Farms) and they carry organic meats as well. They may have turkeys but would for sure be able to get you one. Hope this is helpful!

    • Hi Bill,
I have not been there yet. It does seem as though they carry local meat which is great. I just encourage individuals to ask about what the animals were fed and in the case of beef if it is grass-fed. The less toxins going into the animals, the less we consume. When animals are fed grains, it is to fatten them up and in many cases grains have the same effect on us. I do love supporting local and this is one place I have to check out as they are carrying local produce and meats. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Also check out Macdougall Meadows (macdougallmeadows.com) for pork, turkey, duck, and chicken. They are located in Newport Corner, NS.

  3. Hi, thanks for putting together this list of sources of healthy meats! I just want to point out the first one on the list is Getaway Farms and Butcher Shop (at the Halifax Seaport Farmers Market, oh and they also have a location on Kaye St.) but it is similar to the “Gateway” meat market in Dartmouth (which I’m not sure sells grass-fed beef specifically, but I’d like to know for sure!)

    • Hi! Thanks so much for your comment. I haven’t updated this in a while but we get a lot of our grass fed meats from Sante Centre in Bedford (Noggins Corner Market) and Free Range store in Kearney Lake Plaza. Hope this is helpful…so important to eat healthy meats!

      • It is helpful thanks! Just wanted to see if Getaway Farms could be changed to the correct spelling, otherwise people might go to Gateway instead 😛

  4. Do you happen to have an updated list? Many of these locations don’t exist anymore. Thank you.

    • Thank you, I just updated it since it had been a while! There are likely many more options out there but these are the ones closest to us that we frequent the most often. Best of luck on your journey to eating healthier meats and food in general!

  5. I recently visited Local Source Market on Windsor St in Halifax, I only got collards and strawberries but I know they have a nice selection of local meats.

    • Thank you for letting us know! I haven’t been there in a while but it’s great to know all the wonderful spots carrying local, healthy products!
